Elective Modules (choice of two)
Strategy and Strategic Execution Stream
Core Modules
Project Management:
This module considers Project Management as a vehicle for executing organisational strategy. Learners become skilled in the use of project tools and methodologies to manage the time, cost and quality components of a project, and learn how to make the trade-offs involved. The importance of good team management skills and a comprehensive risk framework stand central to the module. Participants become proficient in developing compelling project proposals.
Entrepreneurship:
This is about the challenge and excitement of creating a new venture. Learners are guided through the process of new venture creation from idea conception and opportunity identification to establishing and growing a new enterprise. Learners will evaluate tactics for pulling together the required resources, and will become familiar with legislation, regulations and formalities pertaining to small businesses in South Africa. Participants will be exposed to entrepreneurial profiling tools. Techniques for managing entrepreneurial teams will be explored.
Marketing Management:
This module will develop the skills to create marketing plans that are appropriate to corporate and business strategy contexts, and that are suitable to specific product and service market segments. Learners will be able to develop strategies for product or service market entries in new, growing, mature and declining markets. This module makes extensive use of case studies and selected media analyses.
Strategic Management:
Strategic Management is structured around the strategic management process: strategy development, implementation, monitoring and control. The process is contextualised in the external and competitive environments. Learners will develop the ability to utilise various key strategic frameworks and methodologies. Learners will also develop the ability to think and act strategically, and to think about and manage organisational change in a holistic way.
Research:
Learners are required to conduct an investigation which will draw on and integrate all elements of their MBA. In preparation, participants will be exposed to quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, learn how to identify research topics, and develop and test research hypotheses. The first part of the module is classroom based. During the dissertation phase a learner will be allocated a supervisor with experience suited to the specific research topic.
Elective Modules
People, Work and Society Stream
Core Modules
Personal, Team and Organisational Effectiveness:
This module equips learners with communication and interpersonal skills that are critical to the successful completion of the MBA programme. Learners are introduced to the integrative strategic framework that will map their journey through the nature and complexity of business.
Organisational Behaviour and Development:
This module adopts a systemic approach to organisational analysis and development in complex organisational environments. Participants are exposed to theoretical models on power, politics, culture, structure and motivation in organisations and are then invited to develop a people management strategy for their work environment. Organisational development tools and methodologies are weaved into change management programmes to assist organisations to meet their strategic objectives. In the context of leadership and management development, learners are invited to discover their preferred leadership styles based on different leadership frameworks.
Business Ethics and Corporate Governance:
Recent and continuing discoveries of corporate misconduct have placed trust and credibility central to the agenda of all enterprises. This module creates a context for the learner to understand how regulators and companies have addressed the matter. Local codes, such as the King II report, as well as international standards, such as Sarbanes-Oxley will be discussed. Ethical theories will be introduced and learners will be encouraged to examine their personal and professional ethics and values in relation to that of the organisation and nation.
Leadership, Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and Spiritual Intelligence (SQ):
Against the backdrop of leadership theories and models, learners are actively encouraged to discover and develop their individual leadership styles. Through a leadership development process, learners discern their particular strengths and weaknesses and develop the ability to harness their strengths and manage their weaknesses in different life contexts. Leadership is interrogated in relation to personal and organisational values, and organisational culture. The module promotes an understanding of the fundamental nature of emotional intelligence and spiritual intelligence to the effective management and optimal performance of oneself, others and the organisation.
Human Resource Management:
In a fast-paced business environment, where change is the only constant, people are an organisation’s most enduring source of competitive advantage. Attracting, retaining, developing and rewarding employees that are right for the business is thus of the greatest importance. Participants in this module will become adept at employing tools to identify people issues facing organisations. They will be able to develop policies and practices to harness performance in support of organisational strategy.
Elective Modules
Economic and Financial Business Context Stream
Core Modules
Economics:
The module is organised around four main themes: microeconomics, macroeconomics, global economics and trade context, and the South African economic environment. These topics set the scene for two questions with which learners will engage. Firstly, what policies and processes do companies put in place to deal with local and global economic impact? Secondly, what skills must global leaders develop to operate effectively in the prevailing economic climate?
Business Accounting:
The ability to understand, interpret and use financial information is key to the future success of managers. This module exposes learners to challenging accounting concepts in an applied, practical manner. Participants in this module will develop the ability to understand and analyse the financial statements of listed South African entities. Learners will become skilled at using accounting information in the decision-making process.
Financial Management:
The aim of this module is to equip learners with the required skills and theoretical background to make sound financial decisions. Sound decisions should consider the global nature of financial markets, as well as the impact of the South African context. The module will also address the management of operating capital, strategic investment and financing decisions, dividends, cost of capital, risk and required rate of return.
