Courage: Newsletter November 2008

For November’s Newsletter the featured Secret of Success is ‘Courage’. In the face of unprecedented volatility in markets and entire economies, courage allows us to overcome the fear that would otherwise prevent true leadership from emerging where it is most needed.

We invite you join us for our 2009 Open Day and we report back on our involvement in various international leadership events as well as our business school’s activities in Zimbabwe. Sandra Perry’s column on Coaching looks at how to navigate rapport in the coach-coachee relationship.

Finally we contemplate some issues faced by training and education providers in the South African context and investigate the dangers of being overly self reliant.

May you grow in courage this month. ‘Yes you can!’

Zimbabwe, for the courageous

Zimbabwe is a beautiful country, characterised by vast open plains, majestic mountains, verdant valleys, bubbling brooks, and unfortunately, very many hauntingly dry and sandy river beds, depending on which part of the country one finds oneself in. We are sad to report that all the reports that you hear and view on radio and television, are  actually true – but that is not all…

Secrets of Success, Featured Secret

Courage

The greatest obstacle on our path to success is fear. Fear enslaves our lives – our spirits, minds, hearts and bodies.

Successful people are courageous. They are able to confront fear in situations of uncertainty or danger they walk through fear. Courageous people defy rules, persevere and expand horizons by breaking through their inner boundaries of comfort.

Courage is not the absence of fear but the ability to resist fear – the ability to bear pain. The source of courage is internal – it resides in the mysteries of love, truth and spirit. Those who are internally confident do not fear the external world. Courage combined with perseverance is magic that dissolves obstacles and opens the door to success and freedom.

Live bravely – because blessings follow the brave. Awaken your potential knowing that the power of courage is within you.

Conversations on Coaching, Part 4

A Series by Sandra Perry

In the fourth piece in this series of coaching conversations we continue from last month’s conversation on building rapport, “the dance behind communication”. Whilst some of us may be naturally inclined to dance in tune, in other words to be in rapport, some may find that their dance is somewhat off beat – pointing to a gap in one’s competencies. Rapport is not simply a matter of either “having it” or “not having it”.

The Dilemma of Retro Training

An article by Dr Reg Broekmann

The public service has undergone a major change since 1994 reminiscent of the change in 1948 when, almost overnight, the public service changed from English to Afrikaans. Our current change, though, is not one of language but of training.
